President's MessageUp arrow

by Darlene Conklé

We’re off to a great start with a full house at our first luncheon. So far, we have 175 members, and the year has just begun. In October, we will have speakers from the Portland Art Museum. Sometimes, we forget what treasures we have in our own backyard.

Board members have been working diligently to set the stage for all the luncheons, programs, and activities. Lynn and Ann already have all the restaurants reserved for the coming year, and Alicia and Karol have the programs lined up. Be sure to mark your calendar for the following dates:

NWC Luncheons

It’s fun to see new groups forming. We often want to find people with the same interests, and that is what is so great about our Club. If you don’t see an activity that interests you, you can start your own group or let our Activity Directors, Lisa and Megan, know so they can advertise for you. Recently, I heard of new groups forming all over the country. I wondered if anyone would be interested in “bird watching.” Since there is an app for everything, of course, there are a few for bird watching. NW has lots of beautiful birds too and fall seems like a fun time to start. I know I see some beautiful birds right in my own backyard. I love that Anna’s hummingbirds stay in the area all year.

In one of the chapters of my life, I worked for a non-profit organization that works to maximize self-sufficiency and enrich the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. It was one of the most rewarding jobs of my career. I’m a true believer in giving back to the community. It’s wonderful to see the response from members joining “Heart to Heart,” led by Nancy and Pat. It always feels good to serve your community.

“Volunteers are love in motion!” —Author unknown

Members of the Philanthropy Committee include Marie Abara, Diana Bower Julie Coari, Darlene Conklé, Sherry Kuntz, Pam Pall, Belinda Trzyzewski, Claire Vaeth, and Sarah York.

I am still buzzing with energy after our September luncheon. Our guest speaker, Susanna Carreno from Project 48, gave an outstanding, enthusiastic presentation that filled my heart—and it clearly sparked incredible conversation around our tables!

Last month, members of our Philanthropy Committee and Heart 2 Heart leaders had the privilege of touring the Project 48 facilities. Seeing firsthand how they support youth experiencing foster care made one thing very clear: our club has an amazing opportunity to make a real, lasting impact.

We’ve already kicked off our fundraising for the organization on a high note with our fabulous Luau Party and our September luncheon raffle basket, which raised $360! But we are just getting started! Whether you have five minutes or a few hours to spare, here are 4 Ways to Be a Hero for Project 48!

  1. Flex Your Volunteering Muscles : Help pack and deliver Essential Bags or sort items in the warehouse. When: Monday – Thursday, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM (Regularly or whenever you have free time!).
  2. Grab the Inside Scoop : Jump on the upcoming quarterly Volunteer Info Session. It’s the ultimate, no-pressure way to meet the team and get oriented. When: Thursday, 9/24 from 1:00 PM – 2:15 PM.
  3. Tap, Like, & Share : Support P48 in under 60 seconds! Follow @p48nw on Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, or Facebook. Liking and sharing their posts helps them crush the algorithm and reach new supporters.
  4. Become a Change-Maker : Set up a small monthly donation. Recurring gifts are a powerful way to ensure these amazing kids consistently get essential supplies, life skills, and culturally relevant hair care.

Heart to Heart is an inclusive group of men and women who meet monthly to support a non-profit organization in the Portland area. We choose organizations that need group enthusiasm to tackle projects their staff can’t handle due to workload or time constraints. Our projects include decorating, assembling, sorting, or organizing donations.

We are off to a great September volunteering at With Love helping to sort donations. We will finish the end of the month at Ronald McDonald House decorating for Fall.

Interested in volunteering? Contact Pat or Nancy for more information or to sign up.

The Single Dining Divas group meets bimonthly for meals: the second Tuesday and the fourth Saturday.

Host responsibilities are rotating. The host Diva chooses between brunch, lunch, or dinner, and whether to host at home or a restaurant. For home events, the host sets the menu and provides the entree; guests bring sides, desserts, and beverages. For restaurant events, the host makes reservations, and each guest pays for their meal. The host decides the number of attendees.

Interested single Divas can join the group by contacting Teresa via email or filling out this form.

Ladies Friendship Lunch GroupsUp arrow

The Ladies Friendship Lunch Groups offer the opportunity for you to develop new and lasting friendships in a quieter setting. There are currently twelve active groups, and we are working on launching the thirteenth.

Our format is for 4-8 ladies to meet monthly, rotating homes. Each host prepares a casual meal or selects a restaurant. If the group meets at a restaurant, each member pays for her own meal. Groups set their own meeting day—for example, second Tuesdays of each month—so that members can keep those calendar dates clear.

There are many ways to socialize with Newcomers and these smaller gatherings are perfect for getting to know each other better on an ongoing basis. Please contact Edisa or Cynthia when you wish to be part of the fun.

Wine EnthusiastsUp arrow

by Joanne Nowak
503-655-4163

Each month, our group tries to travel out to a vineyard, wine store, or sip wine in someone's home and enjoy the company of others who are like minded with an interest in wine. We are part social, but also, we have an interest in hearing the fascinating stories related to how the winery and wine came to be, along with sampling, sharing opinions, and learning new things wine-related.

If you become a member of the Wine Enthusiasts, you will receive an official email invite from me to that month's wine gathering. I do my best to send this out on Sunday mornings, about a month before the event. The dates and times vary depending on the winery, but our tastings are always held on a Saturday or Sunday. I take reservations on a first-come, first-served basis, so I encourage you to sign up ASAP.

I truly look forward to meeting you over a glass of Oregon wine.

Cheers

Joanne and Maria
