Leadership

President’s Message

by , NWC President

It has been a wonderful experience to be President of the club for the past two years. I learned a lot about myself and that getting out of your comfort zone does keep you on your toes! The club has been continually moving forward, with many new members and many on-going requests for information about joining the club from the general public. Our finances are good, our ability to raise impressive amounts of money for our charity and continue to offer excellent social activities for our members is a testament to an organized Board of Directors and generous and active club members.

As the world around us changes , so will the challenges we face as a small organization. The costs involved in renting meeting space, publishing and mailing the newsletter and directory, the costs of luncheons and philanthropic activities, all will continue to go up. We have worked hard to keep all costs as low as possible and we have kept to our budget every year. All these things make me feel proud of this board and the hard work they have done. The future will bring new ideas and challenges for our club, but with the quality volunteers on the board, activity leaders and others who help out in various ways, I feel quite sure we will be in good hands. I sincerely thank each of the board members, Alicia, Susan, Barbara, Darlene, Barb, Cheryl, Ed, Cynthia, Nancy , Ann, Lark, Sarah, Joan, Merryl, Linn, Lynn, Sue, Brenda, Lisa, and Barbra. They each did a fabulous job! I am grateful for each of them.

I want to especially acknowledge the contribution that Ann Billing has made to our club. She has retired from the board and we will miss her. Ann has been on the board for many years taking on many positions. She was our past president as well as the webmaster, two important and time consuming jobs. I feel sure she will be involved in some interesting things now, with all her freed up time! Thank you, Ann, for all you have done for our club.

As the new board begins to gear up, I wish them well and have the utmost confidence in the new leadership.

Thank you all for your support and involvement in the Newcomers Welcome Club! Have a wonderful summer with good health and fun times!

Best wishes,

Sandy

Friendship Luncheons

by and

Friendship Luncheon

Newcomers Friendship Luncheons offer the opportunity to develop new and lasting friendships in a quieter setting, perfect for conversation. The format is for six to eight ladies to meet monthly, rotating homes (even co-hosting if space it tight). Each hostess prepares a casual meal for the group, or selects a restaurant at which to meet, with each member paying for her own lunch. Groups set their own meeting day and time. so that everyone can mark their calendars ahead.

These smaller lunch gatherings are ideal for getting to know one another better, and new groups are forming all the time.

Please contact us if you wish to join in the fun!

Single Dining Divas

by

spoon and fork

The Single Dining Divas have two events each month. Each dinner is hosted by a Diva member in their home. One of the monthly dinners is hosted on the second Tuesday of each month. And the second is designated by the host. That designated host Diva chooses from Brunch, Lunch or Dinner as their preference, as well as the date. All of our Diva members take turns hosting the monthly gatherings in their homes, and should be able to accommodate at least 10 people. The host sets the menu and provides the entree; guests bring the side dishes, desserts and beverages designated by the host.

If you are a single Diva and interested in joining our fun group for home-hosted potluck meals, please contact me, Sharon Harvey.

Wine Enthusiasts

by

Vinyard with Mt Hood in background

In May we celebrated “Wine Month” in Oregon and I hope you all had a chance to make a memorable visit to one of the over 700 wineries with tasting rooms or savored a glass of wine from Oregon with your friends or family (there are over 1,400 vineyards, but not all 900 wineries have tasting rooms).

In the summer months, it is especially satisfying to search out a winery that has outdoor patio/deck in order to capture the amazing vistas and panoramic views that we are so fortunate to have in our beautiful state.

There are numerous web sites that will give you winery information including the Complete Oregon Winery List, etc. Many people ask Marla and I where we get our ideas of where to take our group of Wine Enthusiasts. Here is the short answer, Oregon Wine Press (a free publication in most grocery stores and wine bars) a personal visit which Marla and I have been to in the past, suggestions from family and friends, and of course, "Uncle Google" who has all kinds of info and ideas.

Check your email "in boxes" for my notices which I will be sending out each month to all of you on my Wine Enthusiasts contact list. All participants must be members in good standing of NWC.

Let's raise a glass 🍷 together soon,

Cheers,

Joanne and Marla
