Leadership

President’s Message

by , NWC President

Sandy Esterson

I had such a wonderful time last month at Cheryl Zents’ house where she hosted a beautiful tea for our newest members planned by our New Members Directors, Lynn Pappas and Sue Moore.

Looking around that room I couldn’t help but think that there was a probable future club president sitting there along with many folks whose lives will be greatly enhanced by their membership. It was very heart warming for me to hear these ladies speak about how they had already made some good friends in the club and were enjoying the many activities offered. The delicious food was provided by members of the board and I believe a fun time was had by all. (I have been reading a book that is set in the nineteen-thirties and was thinking if times had not progressed since then I would now be telling you about the fetching outfits each of us had worn 😀)

But, time does march on and we continue to evolve and grow. Voting for next year's charity and new board will soon take place. Please be sure to cast your ballot for these important decisions.

Hoping to see many of you at the up-coming fashion show luncheon, Mad Hatter Tea Party, and maybe on the bocce courts very soon!

Best wishes,

Sandy

Philanthropy Committee News

by

philanthropy

The Philanthropy Committee has met and begun the search for candidates for a charity to sponsor next year. The membership was asked to volunteer any suggestions, and all possibilities were carefully vetted and then discussed in committee. Following the guidelines in our bylaws, the committee will report three choices to the board. Upon approval, it will then send the choices to the membership for a vote.

Our present charity, Hunger Fighters, could be included.

LO Adult Community Center

by

If you enjoy volunteering, please contact Sally Roach to serve lunch at the community center located at 505 G Ave, Lake Oswego. We serve lunch on the 4th Monday of each month from 11:00 am to 1:15 pm. We set tables, serve lunch, and clean up. Volunteers receive a delicious, free lunch! We are a very flexible group so it’s not necessary to serve every month.

Susan Marks Memorial

by Susan Marks

A long‑time member of Newcomers, Susan Marks passed away Jan 10 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Susan participated in Mah Jongg, and was a regular at Knit Wits. She also attended the Saturday night socials and occasionally, Wine Enthusiasts.

A Memorial will be held in Pennsylvania on April 26, 2025, at 9AM Oregon time. It will be live streamed for those who would like to attend virtually. I will attend the memorial and I'll do a reading in her memory. If anyone has any memories they would like to share, I would be honored to read them. I will also send a link when I get it to anyone interested in attending virtually. Please contact me if you're interested.

Calling all Travel Adventurers!

by and

travel suitcase

Some feedback from our survey indicated an interest in travel: sharing your experiences, vendor recommendations, bucket list interests, and establishing a network to interact with each other about travel companions. This network could be a monthly meeting (in person or virtual) with online postings of do's and don’ts from a recent excursion, or asking members about considering a travel companion for future travel. Meetings could also include sharing educational information (seminars) about certain countries, vendors, or travel groups. For us to get this off the ground, we need some interested volunteers to facilitate the design of this adventure group. If interested, please contact either Barbra or Nancy with your level of interest, suggestions, and ideas.

Bon Voyage!

Friendship Luncheons

by and

Friendship Luncheon

Newcomers Friendship Luncheons offer the opportunity to develop new and lasting friendships in a quieter setting, perfect for conversation. The format is for six to eight ladies to meet monthly, rotating homes (even co-hosting if space it tight). Each hostess prepares a casual meal for the group, or selects a restaurant at which to meet, with each member paying for her own lunch. Groups set their own meeting day—for example, second Tuesdays—so that everyone can mark their calendars ahead. A new group is formed whenever enough prospective members have expressed an interest. There are currently ten active groups.

Please contact us if you wish to join in the fun!

Single Dining Divas

by

spoon and fork

The Single Dining Divas have two events each month.  Each dinner is hosted by a Diva member in their home. One of the monthly dinners is hosted on the second Tuesday of each month, and the second is designated by the host. That designated host Diva chooses from Brunch, Lunch or Dinner as their preference, as well as the date. All of our Diva members take turns hosting the monthly gatherings in their homes and should be able to accommodate at least 10 people. The host sets the menu and provides the entree; guests bring the side dishes, desserts, and beverages designated by the host.

If you are a single Diva and are interested in joining our fun group for home-hosted potluck meals,  contact Sharon Harvey.

There are no events scheduled for April.

Wine Enthusiasts

by

Vinyard with Mt Hood in background

April showers bring May flowers AND a very special April tasting event courtesy of Marla, “my partner in wine.” This is just a "teaser" as the complete details will be sent to all 100+ of you Wine Enthusiasts soon. So watch your "IN" boxes for an email from me to give you the date, time, place and “the rest of the story”. I will then take your reservations with the hopes that we will be sipping wine together the first part of April.

Happy Spring,

Joanne and Marla
